An individualââ¬â¢s personality is both inherited as well as shaped by the environment. Our personality is partly genetically inherited from our parents. However, these genetic personality characteristics are altered some-what by life experiences. 4. Each individual is unique in behaviour. There are striking differences among individuals. Thus, personality refers to the sum total of internal and external traits of an individual, which are relatively stable and which make the individual different from others. THEORIES OF PERSONALITY * Trait Theory A personality trait is understood as being an enduring attribute of a person that appears consistently in a variety of situations. A trait differentiates one from another in a relatively permanent or consistent way. A trait of an individual is abstracted from his behavior, and serves as useful ââ¬Ëunit of analysisââ¬â¢ to understand personality. Trait theory is an improvement over the type theories. The type theories unrealistically attempt to place personality into discrete, discontinuous, categories. The trait theory, on the other hand, gives recognition to the continuity of personalities. The theory has also contributed to personality ratings and factor analysis techniques in behavioral sciences.
